To sell more tickets, reservations, or appointments than there are available spaces or resources.
Origin:
Early 20th century, from over- + book.
Examples:
- The airline overbooked the flight and had to bump some passengers.
- The hotel overbooked and had to put some guests in a different hotel.
- The concert was overbooked and some ticket holders were turned away at the door.
- The restaurant overbooked and had to turn away some customers.
- The company overbooked the conference room and had to move the meeting to a different location.
