To have an excessive amount of a particular item or items in stock, often as a result of over-ordering or overestimating demand.

Origin:

Formed from the prefix "over-" meaning "excess" or "beyond" and the root word "stock" meaning "the goods or materials kept on hand by a business", the word "overstock" came into use in the early 20th century.
