- To sew temporarily with long running stitches, to hold the fabric in place before final sewing.
- To moisten meat or poultry with a liquid such as melted butter or pan juices during cooking to prevent it from drying out.

Middle english (in the sense "beat, thrash"): from old norse balsa "beat", of germanic origin; related to balt "club".
