Scold or reprimand (someone) severely.
Origin:
Late 16th century (in the sense "scold"): from french béer "gape" (from the idea of the mouth opening wide to speak) + -ate.
Examples:
- The manager berated the employee for being late.
- She berated him for forgetting their anniversary.
- The coach berated the team for their poor performance.
- He was berated by his mother for not cleaning his room.
