Berate (verb)

Scold or reprimand (someone) severely.

Origin:

Late 16th century (in the sense "scold"): from french béer "gape" (from the idea of the mouth opening wide to speak) + -ate.

Examples:

1. The manager berated the employee for being late.
2. She berated him for forgetting their anniversary.
3. The coach berated the team for their poor performance.
4. He was berated by his mother for not cleaning his room.
5. She berated her assistant for the mistake in the report.
