Blackboard

A large, smooth board painted or coated with dark paint, used for writing on with white or colored chalks.
Origin:
Late 18th century: from black + board.
Examples:
- The teacher wrote the lesson on the blackboard.
- I remember the sound of the chalk squeaking on the blackboard when the teacher was writing something.
- The students were asked to copy the notes from the blackboard.
- The blackboard was wiped clean ready for the next lesson.
- The blackboard was replaced by whiteboard in most of the classrooms.
