A previously developed site that is not currently in use, often with environmental contamination.
Origin:
The term comes from the brown color of the soil due to the presence of pollutants, as opposed to the green of a "greenfield" site.
Examples:
- The city decided to develop the brownfield into a new housing complex.
- The company proposed to build a factory on the brownfield site.
- The brownfield site was contaminated with lead and required extensive cleanup.
- The old gas station was a prime example of a brownfield site.
- The brownfield was left unused for years and became overgrown with weeds.
