Brownfield (noun)

A previously developed site that is not currently in use, often with environmental contamination.

Origin:

The term comes from the brown color of the soil due to the presence of pollutants, as opposed to the green of a "greenfield" site.

Examples:

  1. The city decided to develop the brownfield into a new housing complex.
  2. The company proposed to build a factory on the brownfield site.
  3. The brownfield site was contaminated with lead and required extensive cleanup.
