A chemical compound that contains chlorine and one other element, typically a metal, in which the chlorine atom is in the -1 oxidation state.
Origin:
From the greek word "khloros" which means greenish yellow and "eidos" which means form.
Examples:
- Sodium chloride, also known as table salt, is one of the most well-known chlorides.
- Chlorides are present in seawater, which is why it tastes salty.
- The chloride ion (Cl-) is an important extracellular anion.
- Many metal chlorides are highly soluble in water, but some, such as silver chloride, are not.
- Chloride ions play an important role in the body's fluid balance and acid-base balance.
