The triangular bone at the lower end of the vertebral column in humans and many other primates, typically composed of four fused vertebrae.
Origin:
Latin, from greek kokkyx, cuckoo, because of its supposed resemblance to the tail of a cuckoo.
Examples:
- I fell and broke my coccyx, which caused a lot of pain and difficulty sitting.
- The coccyx is sometimes referred to as the tailbone.
- A coccyx injury can result from a fall or sudden impact to the lower back.
- In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct a painful or dislocated coccyx.
