Conjunctivitis

Inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids.
Origin:
Late 19th century: from latin conjunctiva (see conjunctiva) + -itis.
Examples:
- John was diagnosed with conjunctivitis, and was advised to avoid touching his eyes and to use eye drops regularly.
- The symptoms of conjunctivitis include redness, itching, tearing, and a discharge from the eye.
- In severe cases of conjunctivitis, vision may be affected, and the patient may experience light sensitivity.
- Conjunctivitis is usually caused by viral or bacterial infections, but can also be caused by allergies.
- Treatment for conjunctivitis usually involves the use of antibiotic eye drops or ointment.
