1. To reduce in rank or status.
2. To assign to a lower position or grade.

Origin:

From the late 17th century, from the latin demōtus, past participle of demovere "to remove". ultimately from de- "away" + movere "to move".

Examples:

1. The manager was demoted for cause.
2. The soldier was demoted for insubordination.
3. The company demoted the employee to a lower position.
4. The teacher was demoted from head of the department to just a regular teacher.
5. The student was demoted from the honors class for poor grades.
