Diode
(noun)
An electronic component consisting of two terminals and a semiconductor material, used for rectification or as a detector or rectifier of an alternating current.
Origin:
Late 19th century: from dia- "across" + -ode, on the pattern of triode.
Examples:
- The diode allowed current to flow in only one direction, protecting the circuit from damage.
- The diode served as a simple switch, turning on and off in response to changes in voltage.
- The diode was a key component in many electronic devices, such as radios and televisions.
- The diode laser was used for a variety of applications, including surgery and data storage.
- The diode characteristic curve showed the relationship between the voltage and current in the diode.
