To cut or carve a design or inscription into a hard surface, such as metal or stone.
Origin:
Late middle english: from old french engraver, from en- "in" + graver "to grave", from latin gravare "make heavy". the original sense was "make heavy or weighty", later "make an impression or cut into", giving rise to the current sense.
