Relating to the space outside the dura mater of the spinal cord, especially in relation to administration of anesthesia.
Origin:
Early 20th century: from epi- 'outside' + dural, denoting the dura mater, the outermost of the three membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
Examples:
- An epidural is a type of regional anesthesia that is often used during childbirth.
- Epidural anesthesia is administered through a small catheter placed in the lower back.
- The epidural block provides pain relief without loss of consciousness.
