From latin epitome ("a summary, brief statement, abstract"), from greek ἐπιτομή (epitomē, "abridgment, summary"), from ἐπιτέμνω (epitémnō, "i cut off, i abridge"), from ἐπί (epí, "on, upon") + τέμνω (témnō, "i cut").
