Exonerate (verb)

  1. Prove or declare that (someone) is not guilty of a crime or offense.
  2. Relieve (someone) of a duty or responsibility.

Origin:

Late 16th century: from latin exonerat- "lightened, freed", from the verb exonerare, from ex- "thoroughly" + onus, oner- "a burden".
