Hip

- Either side of the body below the waist and above the thigh.
- A projection of a building or other structure that juts out to support a weight.
- A projection on the top of a distaff to hold the wool.

Old english hype, of west germanic origin; related to dutch heup and german hüfte.
Examples:
- She placed her hands on her hips and frowned.
- The roof was supported by a series of massive stone hips.
- The hip of the distaff held the wool in place as it was spun into thread.
