Origin:
Old english hlǣfdīge "mistress of a household, woman in authority", from hlāf "loaf" + dīge "kneader, servant". the original sense was therefore "loaf-kneader, bread-maker", which developed into "mistress of the household" and then "woman of good breeding and social position".
