- The folded flaps of cloth on the front of a jacket or coat, either side of the button fastening.
- The part of the collar of a jacket or coat that is folded back and sewn down to form a lapel.
Origin:
Mid 17th century: from lap "fold" + -el (later spelled -le, as in buckle).
