Late 16th century: from latin lubricus 'slippery, flattering', from lubeere 'to be slippery'. the original sense was 'smooth and slippery', later 'flattering' (hence 'smooth-tongued'), and now 'sleazy, suggestive of or promoting sexual licentiousness'.
