A device that produces a magnetic field and is used to generate electrical current.
Origin:
Late latin magnetum 'magnet, loadstone' from greek magnētēs 'magnet'.
Examples:
- The magneto in my car is faulty, that's why it won't start.
- An old fashioned telephone used a hand-crank to generate power for the magneto.
- An aircraft's magneto serves as an emergency backup in case the battery fails.
- Magnetos are used in bicycles to power lights.
