Unit of computer storage equal to 1,048,576 bytes (2^20).

Origin:

From greek megas "great" and byte.

Examples:

1. The video file is 5 megabytes.
2. This USB drive has a capacity of 64 megabytes.
3. The computer's RAM is 8 gigabytes or 8,388,608 megabytes.
4. The hard drive can store up to 1 terabyte or 1,048,576 megabytes.
5. The CD can store up to 700 megabytes of data.
