A series of short film segments, each covering a news event of the day, and presented in a cinema as part of a regular program.
Origin:
20th century: from news + reel (because it is shown on a reel of film).
Examples:
- The newsreel showed images of the Second World War.
- The newsreel was a weekly feature in the cinemas during the 1920s and 1930s.
- A clip from the newsreel was shown in the documentary about the history of the film industry.
- Newsreels were a major source of information for people before the advent of television.
