1. Happen, take place, come about, transpire, arise, materialize, eventuate, befall, come to pass, come to light.
2. Come into one"s mind, come to one"s attention, occur to one, strike one, suggest itself, present itself, cross one"s mind.

Late middle english: from old french occorre, from latin occurrere "run to meet, happen", from ob- "towards" + currere "run".
