- To extend over and cover a part of something.
- To have a part or parts in common with something else.
- To exist or occur at the same time as something else.
Origin:
The word "overlap" comes from the prefix "over-" which means "above" or "on top" and the verb "lap" which means "to lie partly over something else". it was first used in english in the early 1500s.
Examples:
- The two schedules overlapped, making it impossible for her to attend both meetings.
- The two pieces of carpet overlapped, creating a tripping hazard.
- The two theories overlapped in some aspects but were fundamentally different.
- The two companies overlapped in their target market and competed fiercely.
