To sleep for longer than intended or required, often resulting in being late or missing an appointment or responsibility.
Origin:
Formed from the prefix "over-" meaning "excess" or "beyond" and the root word "sleep" meaning "the state of rest and unconsciousness", the word "oversleep" came into use in the late 17th century.
Examples:
- I overslept and missed my flight.
- I didn't set an alarm and overslept until noon.
- He overslept and was late for the meeting.
