Overwrite
(verb)
To write or save new information or data on top of existing information or data, often resulting in the loss of the original information.
Origin:
Formed from the prefix "over-" meaning "excess" or "beyond" and the root word "write" meaning "to produce written words by means of a pen, pencil, or keyboard", the word "overwrite" came into use in the early 20th century.
Examples:
- I accidentally overwrote the file and lost all of my work.
- The program overwrote the previous version with the new update.
- The user overwrote the original configuration settings with new ones.
- The hacker overwrote the data on the server with their own.
- Overwriting can cause data loss or security breaches.
