Overwrite (verb)

To write or save new information or data on top of existing information or data, often resulting in the loss of the original information.

Origin:

Formed from the prefix "over-" meaning "excess" or "beyond" and the root word "write" meaning "to produce written words by means of a pen, pencil, or keyboard", the word "overwrite" came into use in the early 20th century.

Examples:

  1. I accidentally overwrote the file and lost all of my work.
  2. The program overwrote the previous version with the new update.
  3. The user overwrote the original configuration settings with new ones.
  4. The hacker overwrote the data on the server with their own.
  5. Overwriting can cause data loss or security breaches.
