A medical condition characterized by weakness or partial paralysis of a muscle or group of muscles, often caused by damage to the nervous system.
Origin:
From the greek word "parēsis" meaning "relaxation" or "weakening".
Examples:
- He had been diagnosed with paresis of the left arm after a stroke.
- The patient was suffering from paresis of the legs, caused by a spinal cord injury.
- Paresis of the facial muscles can result in drooping of the mouth and difficulty speaking.
- The disease caused paresis of the muscle which led to muscle shrinkage and weakness.
