Hanging down; suspended loosely from above.
Origin:
Late 16th century; earliest use found in edmund spenser (c1552–1599), poet. from latin pendulus hanging, from pendere to hang.
Examples:
- The pendulous fruit swayed gently in the breeze.
- The pendulous earrings dangled from her lobes.
- The pendulous flowers swayed gracefully in the wind.
- The pendulous vines crawled down the side of the building.
- The pendulous branches of the old tree drooped to the ground.
