Percentile

A value that represents the percent of observations that fall below it in a data set.
Origin:
Late 19th century: from percentile, from per cent (see percent) + -ile.
Examples:
- The 90th percentile of test scores is the score that is higher than 90% of all the other scores.
- The median salary of the company was found to be at the 75th percentile of all salaries in the industry.
- The temperature at which half the population would find too hot and half would find too cold is at the 50th percentile.
- The 75th percentile of rainfall in the region is 8 inches.
- The top 1% of the population is defined as those who are at the 99th percentile of wealth distribution.
