Percentile (noun)

A value that represents the percent of observations that fall below it in a data set.

Origin:

Late 19th century: from percentile, from per cent (see percent) + -ile.

Examples:

  1. The 90th percentile of test scores is the score that is higher than 90% of all the other scores.
  2. The median salary of the company was found to be at the 75th percentile of all salaries in the industry.
  3. The temperature at which half the population would find too hot and half would find too cold is at the 50th percentile.
  4. The 75th percentile of rainfall in the region is 8 inches.
  5. The top 1% of the population is defined as those who are at the 99th percentile of wealth distribution.
