To increase the pressure of a gas or liquid, often to a level above that of the atmosphere.
Origin:
Pressurize is a back-formation from the noun pressure, which comes from the latin pressura, meaning "pressure or squeezing", which in turn comes from pressus, meaning "pressed".
Examples:
- The company had to pressurize the pipeline to pump the oil through it.
- The pilot had to pressurize the cabin before takeoff so that the passengers could breathe comfortably.
- The scientists pressurized the chamber to simulate the conditions on Mars.
- The gas in the balloon was pressurized to make it rise.
