Prorate (verb)

Divide or assess (a charge or payment) proportionately.

Origin:

Mid 19th century: from latin prorat- "divided proportionately", from the verb pro rata "in proportion", from pro "for" + rata "fixed".

Examples:

1. The rent was prorated for the days that the apartment was occupied.
2. The bill was prorated to reflect the actual usage.
