Using a false or assumed name, especially for writing.
Origin:
Late 16th century: from greek pseudōnymos, from pseudēs "false" + onoma "name".
Examples:
- The author published the book under a pseudonymous name, in order to protect his identity.
- The pseudonymous writer was actually a famous author who wanted to explore different genres under different names.
- He was known for writing under a pseudonymous name, in order to be able to express himself freely without fear of repercussions.
- The pseudonymous letter in the newspaper was signed with a false name, and it's impossible to know who really wrote it.
- The pseudonymous account was created by someone who wanted to remain anonymous while sharing their opinion online.
