Having a strong, unpleasant smell or taste usually caused by being old and stale.
Origin:
Early 18th century: from latin rancidus "rancid", from ranciare "grow rank", from rancor "rankness".
Examples:
- The butter had gone rancid and had to be thrown away.
- The milk was rancid and had to be poured down the drain.
- The nuts had a rancid smell and were not fit to eat.
- The cheese was rancid and had to be discarded.
- The oil was rancid and had to be replaced.
