Allowing some light to pass through but obscuring vision to some degree.
Origin:
From semi- + transparent, from latin transpārēns, present participle of transpārēre ("to show throug.h")
Examples:
- The semitransparent curtain allowed some light to come into the room but still provided privacy.
- Semitransparent materials are used in LCD displays and solar cells.
- The glass was semitransparent, allowing a glimpse of the rooms beyond.
