Spheroidal
(adjective)
- Shaped like a spheroid; having the form of a sphere-like object.
- Resembling a spheroid; having a curved surface.
Origin:
Late 17th century: from french sphéroïdal, from sphéroïde (see spheroid).
Examples:
- Spheroidal planets have a slightly flattened shape at the poles and bulge at the equator.
- The spheroidal structure of the satellite dish helps to focus the incoming signals.
- Some spheroidal stars are rotating so rapidly that they flatten at the poles.
- Spheroidal particles have a high aspect ratio and are therefore difficult to measure.
- The spheroidal shape of the water droplet improved its aerodynamics while falling.
