Stipple (verb)

  1. To create a pattern or texture of dots, dashes, or short strokes, as in printmaking, drawing, or engraving.
  2. To cover or decorate a surface with small, closely spaced dots, dashes, or short strokes, especially in an irregular pattern.
  3. To mark or color a surface in a similar manner.

Origin:

From middle french stippler, from stipe, "straw" or "stump", because of the resemblance to a surface studded with stubble or spikes.
