Exceeding what is necessary or sufficient; unnecessary, excessive, or redundant.
Origin:
Late 16th century: from latin superfluus (from super- "over" + fluere "to flow"), from the notion of something "flowing over".
Examples:
- The extra features on the phone were superfluous and added to the cost.
- His explanation was long and detailed, but much of it was superfluous.
- The company was accused of wasting resources on superfluous luxuries.
- The additional pages in the report were deemed superfluous and removed.
- The decoration on the cake was beautiful but it was seen as superfluous and removed.
