A 20th century art movement and cultural movement characterized by the use of fantastical or dream-like elements, often with a strong element of irony or satire, to challenge the traditional values and conventions of art and society.
Origin:
Derived from the french word "surréalisme" which means "super realism" or "beyond realism", it has been used in english since the 1920s. the term was coined by the french artist andré breton.
