Than (conjunction)

Used to introduce the second element in a comparison of two things, the first of which is usually indicated by "than" or a verb such as "like" or "as".

Origin:

Old english ðān, ðonne, ðænne; related to old high german dān, dann, old norse þá, gothic þan.

Examples:

  1. He is taller than his brother.
  2. I would rather stay here than go there.
  3. I would rather eat pizza than sushi.
  4. She's stronger than she looks.
  5. He's smarter than he seems.
