Updraft

A current of rising air, especially in a confined space, such as a chimney, that can provide lift for a hovering bird or aircraft, or cause a fire to spread.
Origin:
From the early 17th century; combination of up- and draft.
Examples:
- The updraft in the chimney was so strong it nearly lifted the fire out of the fireplace.
- The glider pilot used the updraft to gain altitude.
- The updraft carried the ash and embers from the forest fire into the sky.
- The hot air balloon relied on the updraft to stay aloft.
- The updrafts near the mountain peak made it difficult for the helicopters to fly.
