To have different colors or markings, to make something multicolored or diverse.
Origin:
Late 16th century (in the sense "make varied"): from latin variegat- "marked with different colours", from the verb variegare, from varius "varied".
Examples:
- The butterfly's wings variegate with different shades of blue and green.
- The garden was variegated with different flowers of different colors.
- The artist variegated the painting with different hues and shades.
- The leaves of the plant variegate with different shades of green.
- The quilt was variegated with different fabrics and patterns.
