To lead a passive, inactive, or dull life; to exist in a monotonous state.
Origin:
Late 16th century: from latin vegetat- "animated, enlivened", from the verb vegetare, from vegetus "lively, active". .
Examples:
- He spent most of his days vegetating in front of the TV.
- After the accident, she was forced to vegetate in a hospital bed.
- The prisoners were made to vegetate in their cells for months.
- He was too depressed to do anything but vegetate in his room.
- The plant was just vegetating and not producing any flowers.
