To produce the voice or sound; to utter a speech sound or word; to sing or play a note on a musical instrument.
Origin:
Late 19th century: back-formation from vocalization.
Examples:
- The teacher asked the students to vocalize the vowel sounds.
- The singer vocalized a series of warm-up exercises before the concert.
- The bird was able to vocalize a wide range of songs and calls.
- The actor had to vocalize his lines over and over again until he had them memorized.
- The flute player vocalized a scale to check the tuning of her instrument.
