A measuring instrument used to determine the potential difference, or voltage, between two points in an electrical circuit.
Origin:
Derived from the unit of electric potential, the volt, and the greek word 'metron' meaning measure.
Examples:
- A voltmeter was used to check the battery voltage of the car.
- The electrician connected the voltmeter to the circuit to determine the voltage drop.
- The multimeter in his toolkit had a voltmeter function which he used to test the wall outlet.
