Bursitis

A condition in which the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that cushion and lubricate joints, become inflamed, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness in the affected joint.
Origin:
From the latin word bursa, meaning purse, and the greek -itis, meaning inflammation.
Examples:
- Bursitis in the shoulder is a common problem for people who perform repetitive overhead movements.
- Elbow bursitis can be caused by repeated pressure on the elbow, such as from carrying heavy bags or playing tennis.
- Hip bursitis can cause pain in the hip, groin, or thigh, and can be difficult to differentiate from other conditions such as hip joint arthritis or a muscle strain.
- Knee bursitis can be caused by overuse, injury, or underlying medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
- Ankle bursitis can be caused by wearing shoes that don't fit properly, or by repetitive impact activities such as running or jumping.
