A hairstyle in which the hair is rolled or twisted up at the back of the head and fastened, typically worn by women.
Origin:
Mid 18th century: french, literally "nape of the neck", from chignon "nape", from changer "to change" (because it was originally a hairstyle worn by women who had changed their status, e.g. from maiden to married).
