Homologous (adjective)

Similar in structure and evolutionary origin; having a common origin or structure but with different functions.

Origin:

Derived from the greek word "homologos" meaning having the same origin or source, similar in structure and evolutionary origin.

Examples:

1. The human arm and the bat wing are homologous structures.
2. The fish fin and the mammal limb are homologous structures.
3. The homologous chromosomes are identical in size, shape and genetic content.
4. The homologous proteins perform different functions in different organisms.
5. The homologous genes have the same sequence but different functions.
