Having an aversion to or repelling water; not readily absorbing or mixing with water.
Origin:
Late 19th century: from hydro- + -phobic.
Examples:
- A hydrophobic material will repel water and not absorb it.
- Hydrophobic molecules are often used as water-repellent coatings.
- Hydrophobic surfaces are often used in applications where water resistance is important.
- Hydrophobic surfaces can be found in applications such as self-cleaning surfaces or in water-repellent clothing.
- Some hydrophobic materials can be made water-repellent by applying a hydrophobic coating.
