Nuthouse

A slang term for a mental institution or asylum.
Origin:
Slang, c.1925, of uncertain origin, possibly a shortening of lunatic asylum or an alteration of nut factory.
Examples:
- The patient was committed to the nuthouse after being diagnosed with severe depression.
- After years of struggle, the patient was finally released from the nuthouse.
- The nuthouse was overcrowded and understaffed, making it difficult for the patients to receive proper care.
