Treat (a food or drink, especially milk) with heat to destroy harmful microorganisms, without cooking the item.
Origin:
Late 19th century: named after louis pasteur (1822–95), french chemist and microbiologist, who first developed the process.
Examples:
- The milk is pasteurized to make it safe for consumption.
- The juice is pasteurized to extend its shelf life.
- The cream was pasteurized before being used to make butter.
- The process of pasteurization kills bacteria that can cause illness.
- The wine was pasteurized to stop the fermentation process.
